Chapter 19

It was nearly ten o'clock when Simmons turned up.

"Where have you been?" Thompson asked.

"Went out to Osbourne Park on the way in this morning," Mickey said, "Managed to track down a few places with camera out the front."

"Do you know," Thompson said, innocently, "I was starting to wonder if you might be getting sick of watching all the CCTV. It's really great to see that you're still so enthusiastic about it that you're going out before work to look for it."

Simmons gripped the edge of his chair and made a show of restraining himself from getting up to attack Thompson.

Thompson grinned at him, and he turned around, switching his computer on.

"Yeah, well," Simmons said, "The sooner I find something, the sooner I can get on to something more interesting than watching bloody CCTV."

He slotted a USB stick into the front of the computer. "Did you spend your early years in the job sifting through CCTV, George?"

"Oh, Christ, no."

"Probably before the days of CCTV, was it?"

"Oh, no, there was plenty of it around," Thompson said, "It's just that nobody thought I was a useless prick who was incapable of doing anything else."

Simmons picked up a CD from his desk and frisbeed it across the room at Thompson's head.

With surprisingly fast reflexes, Thompson caught it and sent it flying back again.

The phone rang, but neither of them took any notice. Rolling her eyes, Seoyoon answered it.

Simmons was trying to find something else to use as ammunition, when Seoyoon interrupted.

"George," she called out, "That was reception. Tom Kirby is downstairs to see you and the boss."

When Packer and Thompson went down to the reception, Kirby was standing up, looking nervous.

"Mr Kirby," Thompson said.

"Yeah, g'day again," Kirby said, giving him an awkward smile, "Can I, um, have a quick word?"

"Sure," Thompson said.

He led Kirby back through the door to the inside of the station. He found an empty interview room and waved Kirby inside.

Kirby sat in the chair, looking around the room.

"What can we do for you, Mr Kirby?" Thompson asked,

"Um, well, it's probably more what I can do for you," he said, "See, last night, I started thinking more about what you were asking yesterday. And I remembered a couple of extra things."

"Did you?"

"Yeah. Look, I was kind of surprised yesterday when you showed up out of the blue. I wasn't expecting the police to turn up and start asking me about a murder, right? But I thought about it more after you left. And I thought I'd better come down and tell you, 'cause if you find out some other way, you'll think I was lying to you or something."

"And what is it that you've remembered, Mr Kirby?"

"You were asking yesterday about an African girl? I told you I didn't know her, but thinking about it overnight, I think I know who you mean."

"Do you?"

"Yeah. You were talking about the Indonesian girl with the burnt face? There was a girl came in with her and the boyfriend a few times. I
